Tile Underlayments
Ditra for Tile Installation

Schluter Ditra

Ditra is a membrane that is used with tile installation.  It creates a separation layer for problem substrates, and also helps as a waterproof covering for areas with moisture.

For installation you use a tile mortar that is suitable for your specific application.

Ditra asks that you do use an unmodified thinset to set your tile onto it. This becomes an issue considering most of your tile manufactures ask that you use a modified thinset to fasten their tiles. So if you follow the instructions by Schluter, the manufacturer of Ditra, will the tile manufacturer step up if there is a problem. Probably not, they will tell you that you voided their warranty by using an unmodified thinset, and if you use a modified then the Ditra warranty will be voided. Ditra once was the go to underlayment, but is now being passed by the new tile underlayments with more up to date technology.

Ditra Tile Underlayment Material

Schluter Ditra Underlayment

Schluter Ditra is manufactured using high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which does not rot and is highly resistant to solutions containing salts, acids, and alkalis, as well as many organic solvents, alcohols, and oils. Its resistance to specific stresses can be provided if concentration, temperature, and exposure time are known.

Schluter Ditra is waterproof and resists the transmission of vapor. The material is inert, non-toxic, and physiologically safe. Schluter Ditra also meets the American National Standard for Load Bearing, Bonded, Waterproof Membranes for Thin-Set Ceramic Tile and Dimension Stone Installations (ANSI A118.10) and is listed by cUPC.
